POLISH CORROSION SOCIETY
- FIELDS OF ACTIVITY AND INTERESTS
1. INTRODUCTION
The aim of the Association is to create appropriate conditions for promoting technical progress in anticorrosion protection by popularizing new technologies, promoting technical and organizational progress and development, improving professional standards of Association members and by facilitating the exchange of information.
To achieve this, PSK tries to integrate corrosion professionals in order to solve their professional problems and problems of the corrosion society.
We cooperate with other organizations working in this field:
2. ACTIVITIES IN ANTI-CORROSION LEGISLATION
One of the most important problems facing the Association is official establishment of the anticorrosion profession within the framework of building regulations.
Up till now, professional builders who knew practically nothing about anticorrosion protection were allowed by law to perform designing and supervision of anticorrosion protection means. Our proposals to modify this situation were submitted to appropriate authorities and were published in corrosion magazines. The process of changing law is long and difficult. Nevertheless, we are building a lobby to support our goals and we hope to succeed.
Another important task of the Association is to comment on new regulations appearing within our field of expertise.
Together with the Brigdebuilders Association, we requested and achieved a moratorium for the regulation by the Polish Ministry of Infrastructure (Dz.U.No16 poz.156) concerning safety of work during surface cleaning, paint and hot spray zinc application. Subsequently, our actions led to major changes in this regulation accepted by the Ministry.
At present we are working on technical requirements for fuel bases and fuel stations, long range pipelines for petroleum and oil products and their locations (Dz.U.No.98 pos.1067) and requirements for the technical supervision of unpressurized and low-pressure tanks for inflammable liquids (Dz.U.No.11 pos.1211), issued by the Ministry of Infrastructure. Our concerns are technical requirements concerning anti-corrosion protection.
The Polish Committee for Standardization is formulating our opinions in standards, and proposes changes and withdrawals of out-of-date standards from circulation.
Some examples of our activities in this field are:
- As the result of PSK application the PN ISO 6501-3 standard was translated and the PSK opinion was taken into account,
- An opinion on general standards' project from Standard Problems Committee No.106 of the Committee for Standardization was given and approved,
- An analysis of PN (Polish Standard) contents issued up to the1980's was done. An application for removing standards, which are not consistent with current EN or ISO technical requirements, was submitted to Standard Committee, and is waiting for approval.
3. THE ACTIVITIES OF PSK IN THE FIELD OF TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
The technical activity of PSK focuses on the following topics:
- Defining and implementation of new procedures and standards for measurements of surface and coatings propertiesrieties in the field.
This concerns problems, which are not described in ISO, EN and PN, or the standards descriptions are incomplete or contradictory.
The working groups (WG) on following procedures were formed:
- Porosity evaluation of thermally sprayed zinc coatings (Porosity)
- Pull-off method on rigid surfaces on site measurements (Adhesion)
- The rules ofor thickness measurements on steel structures (Thickness)
Many topics are on the waiting list and we shall form new WG groups.
- Information on literature, new technologies, and standards
The abstracts of interesting articles or Internet web site addresses of such are available on the web page of PSK.
Our members or coworkers describe some problems in detail.
- Case histories
On our web page we present interesting case histories and comment them. Typical mistakes of surface preparation and coating application, humorous misunderstandings, conflicts and problems between contractors and inspectors etc also are given there. We try to illustrate the problems with photos.
- Discussion forum
A forum for discussing professional problems of our members is also on our web page.
- PSK representation in conferences
Our participation in the organization of meetings and conferences PSK organizes seminars on chosen subjects important to the members (during the previous year in Wrocław on European Union regulations concerning anticorrosion protection), technical meetings (last year in Szczecin in cooperation with the Corrosion Section on anticorrosion protection in cooling water systems and on problems with zinc coatings ), meetings of working groups on procedures. We also included some events in the PSK Calendar of Events (Seminar organized by the Gdańsk Fair "Modern technologies of anticorrosion protection", conference "Corrosion 2005 - Science and Economy - New Challenges" organized by the Precision Mechanics Institute).
This year we plan to organize the a session "Interesting case histories" during the conference "Anicorrosion", conference organized by the Polish Association of Chemical Engineers.
4. INFORMATION
Most information for our members and contacts between members and the Board and Members is passed through the web page.
There one can find information about our individual and group members, their professional interests and proposals for cooperation.
All corrosion events organized and supported by PSK, as well as those in which PSK takes part, also are announced there.
Information about our members one can find also in the catalogue edited by PIKS, with which we cooperate.
5. EDITORIAL ACTIVITIES
We are going to publish modified procedures.
We also support publishing of interesting literature concerning anticorrosion protection and construction. This year we supported publishing of "Old Wrocław Bridges" with the history and construction diagrams of these objects.
6. COOPERATION WITH EUROPEAN CORROSION SOCIETY
PSK is the member of EFC. We take part in Federation activities:
- Conferences,
- Working parties,
- Applications for EU grants,
- Works on standards, etc.
Every organization is tempted to believe that is the best one for the people in its field of interest, and we are no exception. At the same time we strongly believe that only cooperation of all people and organizations can solve the problems of our profession, which were, up till now, treated as the poorer sister of building engineering.
